Abstract

In Mexico, professional education emphasizes active learning as the basis for knowledge construction and acquisition. However, first-year university students face diverse psychosocial and academic circumstances that affect their adaptation and academic performance. Since studies on this critical period are scarce in Latin America, this research conducted a systematic literature review following the PRISMA-ScR guidelines. Forty-seven empirical studies published between 2014 and 2023 were analyzed, identified in specialized databases such as Scopus, ERIC DataStar, APA-PsycNET and WoS. The findings identify determinants of academic performance and seek to inform strategies that promote active learning and student retention in higher education.
